DOCTORAL CANDIDATE & CLINICAL EXTERN

Bree Geary, M.A., Doctoral Candidate

Bree Geary, M.A.

Bree Geary, M.A., is a sixth year Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the Health Behavior Lab mentored by Dr. Austin Baldwin. Bree received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Occidental College, her Master of Public Health from University of Southern California, and most recently her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from SMU.

Bree has completed four years of clinical training. As a graduate student trainee at the Center for Medical Psychology at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Plano, Bree provided individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to patients with insomnia, binge eating, depression, and anxiety under the supervision of Dr. Jamile Ashmore and Dr. Desire Taylor.

At Baylor, Bree also co-facilitated a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction group for cancer patients. She completed another external practicum at the Fort Worth Mental Health Speciality Clinic at the Department of Veterans Affairs providing Cognitive Processing Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) supervised by Dr. Brittney Wright. She is currently completing her second year of external practicum supervised by Dr. Molly Martinez providing Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to patients with OCD, OC-related, and anxiety disorders.

We understand that patients may have questions about working with a trainee and they may want to know how this impacts their treatment. Bree Geary is supervised by Dr. Molly Martinez. Therefore, she meets weekly with Dr. Martinez to discuss each case individually. Additionally, Dr. Martinez is available to join therapy sessions as needed and patients can request an appointment with Dr. Martinez. There are both advantages and disadvantages to working with a trainee. One disadvantage is that a trainee will not have as much experience working with patients. However, since trainees have a smaller caseload they tend to have more time to spend preparing for each case individually. If you have any other questions about working with a trainee, feel free to schedule a consult call (email: admin@soartogether.net) or contact Bree Geary directly at bree.geary@soartogether.net.
